The Slab Itself Is Under Tension

Nearly every foundation poured here in the past three decades is post-tensioned: steel tendons run through the slab on roughly a four-foot grid, stressed after the pour so the concrete stays in permanent compression. The Post-Tensioning Institute documents why builders chose the method for this region, since that compression is what lets a slab ride shrink-swell clay without breaking its back. It also rewrites the plumbing playbook. A cut or core in the wrong place can sever a live tendon, and a severed tendon is a structural repair, not a plumbing one. Some slabs carry a stamp warning about it; every one of them deserves to be treated as if it does.
